We help make it super easy and super fun to find projects in the Byron Shire (and other locations like Indonesia) for you to meet great people (locals and visitors), have a great day outside in nature learning something new, contribute to being a custodian of our local area and help protecting our part of the planet. We have the following types of experiences for locals, visitors to the Byron region, tour groups and corporate volunteers

Anyone with a love of the outdoors and interest in the environment. You don’t need any prior skills or experience.
To volunteer on a daily project, you need to be aged between 18 and 75 (but you need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian if you are under the age of 18).
We are in the process of building some relationships with local partners so that people of all abilities (irrespective of any mental or physical restrictions) can be included in these experiences and contribute to creating a better world. We will slowly update the Rangers community around this.
We have different volunteer opportunities to suit your availability and interest. You can volunteer on:

ARE RANGERS EXPERIENCES DIFFICULT?

We ask all potential Rangers to declare any medical conditions, allergies, disabilities or existing injuries that may affect participation. Our Ranger team will discuss these with you in a confidential manner.
We will also be partnering with accredited organisations to make as many of the Ranger experiences available to people of all abilities. Please contact our team to discuss the needs of any potential Ranger participants and how you can get involved.
Our projects are practical, hands-on and take place in both urban and rural areas. Be prepared to participate in all weather conditions. You’ll need to bring appropriate clothing for the weather. We will obviously cancel any projects if the weather is not suitable. Each experience will be monitored on the day. We will update you on the day if any changes via SMS.

Our Ranger team is mult-lingual. We currently have English, Spanish, French and German speakers on the team. We will be adding more language skills to ensure we make the experiences accessible for all language and cultural groups.
WHO ARE THE OTHER VOLUNTEER RANGERS?
As a Byron Ranger, you are part of a team of 10 - 100 volunteers, helping to conserve a part of our unique habitat in the Byron shire or in Indonesia. As well as making a real difference to the environment, volunteering is a great way to make friends, improve your English skills, get experience for your CV in Australia or your home country or to understand more about Australian culture. The other Rangers on your project team might be travellers, students, workers from an organisation or locals who have lived in the area for years.
WHO ARE THE RANGERS TEAM LEADERS?
Our experienced and enthusiastic Team Leaders come from a range of backgrounds. They are all qualified in Work Health and Safety (WHS), First Aid and defensive driving, and are also knowledgeable about the practical conservation projects we operate. But above all, they want you to enjoy your experience as you help the environment, learn and have a laugh along the way.
HOW DO I GET TO THE PROJECT?
For each project there is a central meeting and drop-off point. We will pick you up from the meeting point and travel together to the project site to minimise vehicle usage, returning to drop you off at the same place at the end of the day/project. Most projects leave from the Rangers Shack in Byron Bay.
WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR?
To ensure your safety on our projects, please wear a comfortable long sleeve shirt and trousers. We recommend you wear old work clothes or a Ranger uniform which you can purchase. We also recommend strong safety work boots with protective toe caps - or just good sneakers. Covered shoes are essential.
A daily backpack containing a sun hat, wet weather clothing, sunscreen (SPF 50+) and a water bottle will be necessary.
We will let you know what to wear for each experience.
Corporate Volunteer projects and other tour groups will have a Ranger Uniform provided (t-shirt and work shorts / pants) and possibly other items dependent on what the corporate is keen to do for their team members.

If you are joining one of our overnight or longer projects, pack your lunch only for the first day, other meals will be provided. Teams on away projects do help with meal preparations and cooking, washing and cleaning up.
Don’t worry if you’re not a great cook as everyone can do something to help, even if it’s just chopping vegetables. Fresh produce, meat and vegetables are used as often as possible although this cannot be guaranteed every day, particularly on remote projects far from shops, so please make allowances.
Special diets, such as vegetarian, vegan or food allergies are 100% catered for – please remember to let us know when you book so we can have yummy plant based awesomeness for you on a project.
